LangDev 2024 has solidified itself as the meeting point for professionals, researchers, and companies focused on the development of programming languages and related tools. The event, organized with an innovative vision, brought together experts from around the world to discuss and learn about advancements in key technologies.

During LangDev 2024, successfully held in Seville from October 17-19, 2024, Metadev had the opportunity to contribute to the event with several talks.

One of them, "Improving the Observability & Security of Kubernetes with MDE" was presented by Javier Centeno, Jesús Rodríguez, and Pedro J. Molina.

We explored how Kubernetes, one of the most widely used platforms for container management, can benefit from advanced solutions that enhance both observability and security. The Enterprise computing is moving steadily to containers and using orchestration tools with different flavors of the same ground: Kubernetes.

Kubernetes is capable of managing many machines (physical or virtual) to deploy containers in a distributed manner in a way we can provide high-availability, flexible load balancing, and fast provisioning. Mid and large-sized enterprises run hundreds of containers inside such Kubernetes clusters. Therefore the need for Observability and Security checking the graph of nodes, applications, services, instances & dependencies is a real need at scale.

Traditional tools in the Kubernetes landscape are governed by textual tools: YAML. There is space for building better graphical tools to represent and visualize the current state of a cluster (linked with real-time telemetry) showing dependencies, failing components, security risk, etc. The model discovery process makes a reverse engineering task to discover services, pods, containers, networks and its topology. At the model level a visualization is provided (Digital Twin) as a virtual representation of the physical assets to be observed & monitored.

Our presentation highlighted how these solutions not only facilitate real-time monitoring but also help teams make more informed and faster decisions in complex environments.
